Towards the Development of Evidence Based ASL Lab: Exploring Students’ Perspectives

Anticipated Closing Date: October 2021

We are conducting a research study to explore ASL students’ perspectives regarding the components of an effective laboratory to support ASL instruction (an “ASL Lab”).  We are interested in finding out which components of an ASL lab students think are important, and what kinds of improvements might need to be made to improve effectiveness.  Current or former ASL students, who have participated in an ASL Lab at any institution, are invited to participate.  Involvement in the study is expected to take approximately 2 hours over the course of 1 month to complete a written (typed) questionnaire, video interview, and follow up conversation via email or video conferencing.  Participants will be compensated for their time in the form of a $15 Amazon.com gift card which will be sent electronically via email upon completion of participation.

If you agree to be in this research, your participation will include:

  • Completion of a written (typed) questionnaire via email correspondence regarding your perspectives of an ASL lab.
  • Follow up interview of approximately 1 hour, via Zoom, to discuss your perspectives in more detail.
  • A follow up check-in with one of the researchers, via e-mail communication or Zoom meeting, to discuss the researcher’s interpretation of your perspectives and provide any additional thoughts or clarification.

Redefining the Landscape of Educational Interpreting

Anticipating Study Dates: October – December 2021

Researchers in the field of educational interpreting are studying educational interpreters and their workplace situations.  We are interested in finding out information about the individuals who are providing these services, such as personal demographics and credentials, as well as the conditions and provisions of the employing school districts.  If you currently interpret in a preschool through twelfth grade educational setting, or have done so within the two years, or if have provided services for an educational setting through remote or virtual means, you are invited to participate in this study, because you have valuable perspectives to share.  Your involvement in the study is expected to last about 30 minutes to complete the online survey.

As a result of taking part in this research, you will help us understand more about educational interpreters and educational interpreting, which can contribute to improving the field.

The first 200 participants to complete the survey will receive a $10 discount towards membership in the National Association of Interpreters in Education (NAIE), which can be initial or renewal.

Upon completion of the study, which is anticipated to be no later than March of 2022, 10 participants who complete the survey will be randomly chosen to receive a $50 Amazon gift card.

This research is sponsored by the National Association of Interpreters in Education (NAIE).
